Important Team Information

All teams must be register and sanctioned with NICA to conduct activities. Team Directors contact the League Director to coordinate registering your team. Registering your team protects your coaches, your student-athletes, the league and your school with a comprehensive insurance program. Unsanctioned/unregistered teams/clubs holding activities are subject to penalties. Please note that all league teams must adhere to team training limits.

Team Registration Cost

As part of the NICA risk management program, discounts are offered to teams that comply with the Team Director requirements.

Division I Teams: $450 ($325 with discount)

Division II Teams: $300 ($175 with discount)

If you have questions about team registration, please contact the League Director.

Divisions

The Texas League is a Tier I League. This means all teams will be registering and competing as Division II teams. Depending on the size and number of teams. The League may opt to become a Tier II League with both Division I and Division II teams. (Please note that Team Division only pertains to team size – not school size or other factors).

Team Scoring

Teams are awarded points after every League race which count toward the teams’ standings at that individual race and for the overall series. Both girls and boys points count toward that team’s overall score. While teams need not have boys’ and girls’ points to score for a race, having riders of both genders is required to be highly competitive. Due to the difference in team size between divisions, Division I teams and Division II teams are scored differently . . .

For Division I, the team’s score is highest score possible out of the following boy/girl combinations:

  • BBBBBBGG
  • BBBBBGGG
  • BBBBGGGG
  • BBBGGGGG
  • BBGGGGGG

For Division II, the team’s score is the highest score possible out of the following boy/girl combinations:

  • BBBG
  • BBGG
  • BGGG

Independent Student-Athletes

Don’t have a team to race with? That’s ok! Students can compete as an independent racer in the League Series. While they will not be eligible for participation in team competition, they are eligible for the Individual Race and Overall titles. Independent racers need not register a team, and should only register for the series. All other rules apply. Contact the League Director to register.

Composite Teams

Composite Teams may form that are comprised of full-time students from more than one high-school within the same district or other geographic proximity. Composite teams must first seek approval of their geographic scope. Contact your league director to discuss a composite team in your region.

Composite Team Limitations: Because Composite Teams are intended to be temporary solutions towards building Single School-Based Teams or County-Based Home-School Teams, riders may only score for Composite Teams for a maximum of 2 years. In addition, if a Composite Team has 5 or more students from the same school, those 5 or more students will be scored separately from the rest of that Composite Team unless a petition to do otherwise is approved. See the League Rule Book (PDF) for more details.

Home-Schooled Student-Athletes

Home-schooled student-athletes are not allowed to join school-based teams, but they may join a composite team, form a regional home-school team or simply race as an independent rider. Home-school teams a much like composite teams but are comprised of home-school students from a given geographic region.
